MAS Toledo Off to a Great StartDate Posted: Thursday, February 21, 2008 In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful First MAS The conference featured sessions on spiritual development and its practical application to American contemporary society and sessions on increasing civic empowerment skills. Speakers included Muslim American Society President, Dr. Esam Omeish, Dr. Sulayman Nyang, Dawud Walid, Imam Mahdi Bray, Raeed Tayeh, Omar Atia, and Dr. Sameera Ahmed. In addition to focusing on the American Muslim legacy, emphasis was also placed on the important contribution of the African influence on Islam in One attendee commented on how much they appreciated the MAS focus on youth leadership and civic participation. The event also featured a frank exchange between panelist Ben Davis of the ACLU, the audience, and FBI Agent Scott Smith concerning civil liberties and the way law enforcement was engaging the Muslim community.
