In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

First MAS Toledo Chapter Conference Held at University of Toledo

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MASNET) February 22, 2008 - MAS Toledo held its first annual conference February 16, 2008 at the University of Toledo. Hundreds attended the full-day session themed "The Muslim American Legacy Embracing the Past- Building the Future".

The conference featured sessions on spiritual development and its practical application to American contemporary society and sessions on increasing civic empowerment skills.

Speakers included Muslim American Society President, Dr. Esam Omeish, Dr. Sulayman Nyang, Dawud Walid, Imam Mahdi Bray, Raeed Tayeh, Omar Atia, and Dr. Sameera Ahmed.

In addition to focusing on the American Muslim legacy, emphasis was also placed on the important contribution of the African influence on Islam in America as a special tribute in recognition of  African American History Month.

One attendee commented on how much they appreciated the MAS focus on youth leadership and civic participation.

The event also featured a frank exchange between panelist Ben Davis of the ACLU, the audience, and FBI Agent Scott Smith concerning civil liberties and the way law enforcement was engaging the Muslim community.

The conference concluded with dinner and entertainment featuring Native Deen and a skit by the MAS Toledo youth group.

MAS Toledo is actively recruiting community members for its ongoing community civic projects and youth events. For additional information contact MAS Toledo at (419) 320-0104.
